I had fun with this one!
Rachmaninoff is one of my favorite composers. If you don’t know me, I love texture. I love texture in music, in literature, and most importantly in wine. Just kidding…
The first movement of Piano Concerto No. 3 is incredibly rich. The simple melody is filled with counterpoint and underscored with constantly shifting cords. The running lines of sixteenth notes (semiquavers), uplift the spirit. Although obnoxious to learn, requiring hours of woodshedding, the fast chordal movement trickles like a stream under the power of the melody.
My arrangement takes advantage of the full range of the clarinet & bass clarinet spanning from the extension key low D (bass clarinet) to a altissimo G on Bb. As an arranger I am prone to change original keys to make things more ‘user friendly’ both for range and key signatures, but that was not required here. The original key of d minor remaining intact.
